Interplay’s Stonekeep feels gridlocked. Stonekeep went through a long and bumpy creation cycle. When it was first drawn up and later due for release somewhere around 1991, it was supposed to run on a 80286 CPU and not require a hard-drive. Computer hardware advanced at a steady pace, however, and the game went through an equally steady stream of feature creep until it finally shipped before.

The game includes a surprisingly well-written novel which describes the backstory about the world, Thera and Stonekeep in great detail, perfectly setting the stage for the actual game. The game is played in real time, i.e. things happen regardless of whether you move or not. The basic gameplay is very simple, and very easy to learn. Use the arrow keys to move around, use the mouse to pick up.

Stonekeep is a role-playing video game developed and released by Interplay Productions for the PC in 1995. It is a first-person dungeon crawler game with pre-rendered environments, digitized characters and live-action cinematic sequences. Repeatedly delayed, the game that was supposed to be finished in nine months took five years to make.

The game is fun to play, although some role playing purists might bemoan the lack of character customization. Stonekeep features a long quest, with plenty of great characters, but is hampered somewhat by slightly tedious combat and endless.

On the dark side of that, a Stonekeep title was recently, and very quietly, released as a crappy kid-friendly Wii game that has practically nothing to do with its PC predecessor. It seems odd that someone spent money for the rights to tack the Stonekeep name on a game destined to stink up bargain bins from its birth, but maybe it was just a move to keep the rights to the Stonekeep name.
